1. Deep Dive on Past Experience (20 Mins)
- what level of ownership were you taking in each role?
- Walk through their resume, and dive deep into each role they had — look for a clear graduation / escalation in responsibilities throughout their career
- What were your top responsibilities in each role?
- How did your boss define what doing a “great job” looked like in this role?
- Is this a person who will feel like they were thrown into the abyss if they can’t come to Austin make decisions on most things?
- How do they handle ambiguity?
- how did you handle missing invoices or tax documentation?
- tell us about a time you had to resolve an issue with a vendor or contractor payment
- Accounting experience
- have you ever worked with external accountants? how did you collaborate?
- What about internal accountants?
- how did you ensure tax payments (federal, state, local) were made on time?
2. Live Problem-Solving Exercise (20 Mins)
we’ll give them real scenarios they’ll deal with in the role and see how they approach them
- scenario 1: a contractor was paid in USDC, but we never collected their W-9. what do you do?
- scenario 2: a $5,000 payment in Xero has no attached invoice. how do you resolve this?
- scenario 3: our tax advisor emails us about a discrepancy in reported crypto balances vs. our actual holdings. how do you investigate?
- scenario 4: we’re planning a team offsite. what’s your step-by-step process to budget, book, and handle reimbursements?
- scenario 5: you log into Brex/Xero and see an integration failure—transactions haven’t synced in 3 weeks. what do you do?
3. Candidate Questions (10-15 Mins)
